AFAP members are invited to attend two special Safety & Technical events being held ahead of the AFAP’s 66th Annual Convention in Adelaide next month.
Thursday 16 October 2025
09:00 – 16:30 AEST
The Drive Adelaide
War Memorial Drive, North Adelaide, South Australia
09:00 – 12:30: INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM – PROPOSED REMOTE DIGITAL TOWERS
Did you know that Digital Towers are coming to Australia? This workshop will discuss the challenges of the new technology and what a pilot should know. Our guest speaker, Commander Tomas Gustafsson, will share his insights as a European technical expert in remote towers.
Commander Tomas Gustafsson
Tomas started his aviation career in SAS 1989, and today is a commander on Airbus aircraft, still with SAS. Tomas has been engaged in the Swedish ALPA Flight Safety Committee for the last 20 years. He is also active in international work under IFALPA and the European Cockpit Association, where, as a subject matter expert, he represents pilots in two working Group’s about Remote Towers at ICAO and EASA.
13:30 – 16:30: CABIN AIR QUALITY UPDATE
Aircraft cabin fume events continue to pose high risk to the health of domestic and international flight crew. Captain Rondeau Flynn will update us on best practice handling of these events for both the pilot and the aircraft. GCAQE spokesperson Captain Tristan Loraine will report on recent progress in GCAQE activities, including low organophosphate oils, blood marker research and recent incidents.
Captain Rondeau Flynn - CAPA Aeromedical Committee Chairman
Captain Rondeau Flynn serves as the Aeromedical Committee Chairman for the Coalition of Airline Pilots Associations representing over 30,000 professional airline pilots. He is a distinguished leader in aviation safety, pilot wellness, and occupational health. Captain Flynn, a Northeast-based Boeing 737 pilot for American Airlines, has over 25 years of experience in the commercial airline industry, encompassing Part 121 operations and 13,000+ flight hours. He is an Airline Transport Pilot, a former Part 121 Check Airman, and holds type ratings for the Embraer 135/140/145, Airbus A319/320/321, and Boeing 737 NG/MAX.
Captain Flynn has played a pivotal role in shaping pilot advocacy. He recently served as a designated representative on the FAA Mental Health & Aviation Medical Clearances Aviation Rulemaking Committee, bringing real-world operational expertise to discussions on Pilot Mental Fitness. In addition, as the Chairman of the Global Cabin Air Quality Executive (GCAQE), a UK-based occupational health organization, he champions initiatives to improve cabin air quality and occupational health standards for aviation professionals.
Captain Tristan Loraine - GCAQE
Tristan is a former British Airways captain who became ill after breathing contaminated air, leading him to become a filmmaker and activist for cabin air quality. He co-founded the Global Cabin Air Quality Executive (GCAQE) and has directed documentaries, such as This Is Your Captain Speaking, which explore the dangers of toxic fume events on aircraft. Tristan will update the audience on recent progress in GCAQE activities, including low organophosphate oils, blood marker research and recent incidents.
