Aerodrome & Ground Environment (AGE)

Runway works and displaced threshold incidents

There have been multiple incidents across all of our airlines, at airports with displaced thresholds. ADL and HBA are the most recent hotspots.

AFAP/AusALPA S&T have added these incidents to the National Airports Safeguarding Advisory Group (NASAG) agenda and have added our pilot’s experiences and suggestions to the consultation on: Safe planning and conduct of aerodrome works, ADVISORY CIRCULAR, AC 139.C-15 v1.0

Airport Obstacle Limitation Surface (OLS) Changes

The AFAP has been involved in responding to international (ICAO) consultations via CASA and IFALPA’s inputs to ICAO. These proposed changes are progressing, and CASA is progressing to establish a Technical Working Group (TWG), which S&T staff Lachlan Gray will continue to represent pilots and safety interests via this group.

Airport and Local Runway Safety Team (LRST) meetings

MEL LRST meeting - AusALPA reps raised an issue with the L.E.D light intensity.

Melbourne airport took on this input and conducted a trial to revise the minimum light intensity possible. The trial was successfully completed as of April 15 where the intensity across the entire airfield was reduced with results indicating that it has made a major difference. The attached picture provides an idea of how the current reduction differs from the previous intensity, including the greatly reduced glaring effect.

Their team extends a thank you to AusALPA for our input and appreciates our support with this trial.
