Fatigue Management Survey & Research
AFAP has begun early discussions with UNSW researchers to rerun major pilot fatigue studies last conducted eight years ago. The project aims to compare historical and current data, examine known fatigue hotspots, validate reporting inputs (including Samn-Pirelli ratings), and capture pilot perspectives on fatigue safety culture. Members will soon be invited to participate—your insights remain a critical data source for fatigue science.
Updated Fatigue Reporting Guidance
IFALPA’s Fatigue Reporting Briefing Leaflet has been refreshed, now featuring practical terminology designed to help pilots describe fatigue impacts more accurately in reports. The new approach focuses on operational relevance rather than technical definitions, thanks to Lachlan Gray’s work within the IFALPA Fatigue Management Working Group.
Cabin Air Quality (Aero-toxicity)
At the AFAP pre-convention day, experts Capt Tristan Lorraine (GCAQE) and Capt Rondeau Flynn (CAPA) shared updates on fume-event research and global advocacy initiatives. AFAP has drafted a Cabin Air Event Checklist (Appendix 1 example WIP below) and invites member feedback to refine this important operational tool.
AFAP Continuous Resilience Development Program (AFAP CRD)
Interest in the Resilient Pilot program continues to grow, with AFAP’s 50% subsidy for 12 members taken up almost immediately. AFAP member participants are developing Non Technical Behaviours and Competencies in a no jeopardy environment with positive benefits in their cyclic simulators and on the line. The new RPAP company is making the program available to commercial clients being used as ongoing exposure and development of non tech skills with particular interest in instructor development—underway. Ongoing updates include work on CPL-specific and helicopter/EMS virtual scenarios. For more information scan the QR code.

Training & Skills Development – Industry Skills Australia
Although the ISA project had reached its final stage, a recent urgent meeting highlighted confusion between ASQA and DEWR regarding mapping TAE qualifications to Part 61 for the aviation VET pathway. Further clarification and alignment work is now underway.
PACDEFF 2025
AFAP representatives attended PACDEFF 2025, the world’s largest CRM, NTS, HF and fatigue management conference. Key sessions raised concerns about declining safety and just culture practices, reinforcing AusALPA’s advocacy focus. Workshops provided hands-on learning in CRM, HF, and fatigue management. PACDEFF 2026 will take place in Brisbane on 20–21 October.
