EA11 Negotiations Update
The AFAP is aware that earlier today AIPA issued a communication stating that its analysis indicates the proposed package would produce pay outcomes lower than those contained in the proposal rejected by pilots in April.
As we have consistently stated throughout this process, we have no intention of supporting an agreement that is not a material improvement on the April offer. Our bargaining position has been guided by the clear direction provided by pilots through our post-No vote surveys: no reduction in the value of the April package, a fairer and less punitive structure, meaningful reform to Blank Lines, reduced concessions and a simpler, more workable agreement.
At this stage, it appears the AFAP and AIPA have adopted different assumptions and methodologies in modelling the proposed pay outcomes. Rather than speculate publicly about those differences, we believe they should be properly examined by all parties.
This is precisely why the AFAP sought to ensure AIPA had the opportunity to review the package and provide feedback before any in-principle agreement was finalised. We have consistently maintained that, where possible, the best outcome for pilots is one that attracts the support of both unions.
We look forward to AIPA explaining its modelling and assumptions to the Fair Work Commission, Qantas and the AFAP during Wednesday’s conciliation conference. That process will allow the parties to understand exactly where the differences arise.
As we have said previously, the AFAP remains open to any genuine improvements that can be secured, provided they do not undermine the overall integrity of the package. If AIPA is able to extract further value from Qantas, that would complement the significant work already undertaken by the AFAP to materially reduce concessions, simplify the overall agreement and improve the package compared with the proposal rejected by pilots in April.
We will continue to keep members informed as discussions progress through the Fair Work Commission conciliation process.
