AFAP Update - CAE Major Change

RE CAE Flight Instructors: Major Change

CAE Major Change
The AFAP has written to CAE management regarding the current major change, that has intent to reduce flight instructor numbers at CAE.

The AFAP are seeking more information from CAE, as well as requested that more information be provided to the pilot group.

The AFAP has also proposed that some sensible approaches to the redundancies occur, that will assist to mitigate the negative impact (such as voluntary redundancies, redeployment options (where suitable), and also agreed criteria to assessing way forward should some classification groups remain over-staff compared to the proposed new structure.

Attached here is the AFAP Correspondence and outlining the Fair Work Act and Air Pilots Award obligations.

The AFAP can assist with individual meetings, discussion, and will also seek some pilot feedback regarding the proposed changes.

CAE also later today provided the following correspondence to the AFAP.

Potential Redundancies
CAE Australia Flight Training (the Company) is currently considering a restructure because of downturn in the work and finances of the business. We are therefore writing to notify you of a proposed major workplace change which has the potential to affect one or more of your members.

We confirm that the expected effect on employees will mean the following roles may potentially become redundant:

1. Proposed changes to the Training Managers role, this will be reallocated to the current leadership team, number of role impacted x4
2. Proposed changes to the number of Turbine Instructor reducing from 3 to 2
3. Proposed changes to the number of G1 MEIFR: reducing from 5 to 2
4. Proposed changes to G3 Flight Instructor: With no ongoing work guarantee, reducing the number of ongoing full-time instructor

We are in the process of holding consultation meetings with the affected employees on 16th and 17 Oct 2024 at 8:30 AM onwards. Before we make a final decision in this regard, we will consider any suggestions or matters raised by each employee to avoid the potential redundancy of roles and whether we can reasonably redeploy them into any other roles within the Company.

The Company confirms a representative of Peninsula Australia will be present at the meeting. The role of the Peninsula Australia representative is to support/facilitate the meeting and to ensure procedural fairness.

Other CAE Matters

  • The AFAP will provide further updates to members in due course about next steps regarding concerns of training costs/bonds out of scope of the Award being applied to pilots at CAE. To date there is no interest from CAE or their representative to openly discuss what training arrangements or bonds have been implemented.
  • CAE has provided a copy of the relative accident insurance (which was confirmed but not provided in previous updates). CAE has taken steps regarding a number of matters raised regarding concerns of the individual flexibility agreement(s), and loss of licence payment issues.
  • More updates to come in due course, however, the focus of the AFAP in the near future will be on mitigating negative impacts of the major change.

If you require assistance or have any queries, please do not hesitate to reach out for assistance to AFAP via email to Industrial Officer, Jason Newell at Jason@afap.org.au.

Yours Sincerely,
The AFAP Industrial Team
