Thank you to everyone who completed the AFAP EA survey, which has now closed. The response rate was overwhelming, with almost 700 pilots taking the time to share their views.
The AFAP negotiating team is now in the process of collating and analysing the survey data, including the extensive open-text responses. The team will be meeting at the AFAP Melbourne office in late April and early May to formulate our log of claims. These will be based on the both the survey feedback and the key issues we already know are a priority for members in the upcoming EA.
As part of this process, we are also undertaking detailed benchmarking across comparable airline agreements. This analysis extends beyond salary and remuneration, incorporating key aspects such as days off, roster credit protection and disruption provisions, standby schemes, and part-time arrangements.
Our experienced industrial officers, Deanna Cain, Pat Larkins, and Andrew Molnar, bring valuable insight into the Virgin and Qantas short-haul EAs via their direct involvement in bargaining at these operations. An accurate ‘apples-to-apples’ comparison requires a detailed understanding of how agreements operate in practice, along with realistic assumptions. Their close working relationship with pilot representatives at those airlines (who live and breathe these EAs daily) will bring unparalleled insight and credibility to the benchmarking process.
We will also be meeting with AIPA representatives in early May to discuss our respective survey results and to explore opportunities for alignment on key bargaining claims. While we remain open to collaboration where it benefits our members, it is important to remember that the AFAP is a member-led organisation. Our bargaining position will ultimately reflect the views and priorities of our nearly 900 Jetstar members.
Our first formal bargaining meeting with Jetstar is scheduled for the week commencing 12 May, with further meetings expected to continue on a fortnightly basis.
Following that initial meeting, we will provide members with a comprehensive update on the bargaining process, including a summary of the survey results and the key claims we intend to pursue.
