NJS Pilot Council - Update - June

More DETC’s to NJS

The NJS AFAP Council have been advised that the company intends to hire additional Direct Entry Training Captains (DETCs) to support an expected increase in training demand. The company has cited the following reasons:

  • An increase to the A220 delivery schedule - with three additional aircraft now expected to arrive in 2026 beyond the original plan.
  • A shortfall in Training Captains applications - with current expressions of interest (EOI) under S58/25 not meeting operational requirements.

While the EOI remains open until 31st December 2025, we strongly encourage any pilot considering a move into the training space to submit an application as soon as possible, even if you have not yet completed your own A220 training.

The AFAP Council is also seeking to hear from any individual who have submitted an application for a Training Captain role but have not yet received a response. If this applies to you, please reach out to an AFAP Council member as soon as possible.

AFAP continues to press the company to demonstrate that these additional DETC appointments are truly required for genuine operational reasons, and that the internal supply of available and willing Training Captains have been exhausted. We are also reminding the company of its ongoing failure to address the underlying issues that have led many highly regarded and experienced Training Captains to leave the training department in recent years.

Member meetings and Roadshows

The Council is also in the final stages of organising a series of member EBA meetings and roadshows. Sessions available will include both in-person and online options to ensure accessibility for all members.

The purpose of these meetings is to:

  • Provide an overview of the negotiation timeline and process
  • Share the latest EA survey results
  • Facilitate an open discussion to better understand what matters most to you

Your engagement is critical. These discussions will directly shape the log of claims and help set the course for the upcoming enterprise agreement negotiations.

Stay tuned……. meeting times and locations will be released in the next week or two.

As always your Council are:
